Abuja, Nigeria — The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has encountered a major procedural setback after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declined to acknowledge its notice for an upcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.
In a letter dated June 13, 2025, and signed by the Commission’s Acting Secretary, Haliru Aminu, INEC stated that the submitted notice did not comply with Section 2(12)3 of the 2022 Regulations and Guidelines for Political Parties. The regulation mandates that both the National Chairman and the National Secretary must jointly sign any notice of convention, congress, or meeting before submission to INEC.
“The Commission draws your attention to the fact that the notice is not in compliance with the stated requirement,” the letter read in part. “Be guided accordingly.”
The PDP has yet to issue a formal response to the correspondence as of the time of reporting.
The situation has further complicated internal dynamics within the party, particularly with the lingering
dispute over the position of the National Secretary. The legal implications of a recent Supreme Court judgment involving Senator Samuel Anyanwu and Ude Okoye have left the party divided over rightful occupancy of the office.
This development adds to the growing challenges facing Nigeria’s main opposition party as it grapples with internal leadership disputes and mounting political pressure ahead of future elections.
