Osogbo, Nigeria — A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, Hon. Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, has called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and prevent a potential outbreak of violence following the recent Court of Appeal ruling on the 2022 local government elections.
In a statement released on Sunday in Osogbo , Oyintiloye expressed concern that the ruling delivered last Friday has sparked growing tension across the 30 local government areas of the state.
He explained that although the Court of Appeal struck out the APC’s application to relist its appeal against a 2022 Federal High Court judgment that annulled the LG polls, it did not invalidate the judgment delivered on February 10, 2025, which reinstated the APC-elected chairmen and councillors.
The former lawmaker warned that the alleged misinterpretation of the judgment by the PDP-led state government, including its move to take control of LG secretariats on Monday, June 16, could trigger a breakdown of law and order.
“The PDP’s interpretation of the ruling is misleading and dangerous,” Oyintiloye noted. “The APC local government chairmen and councillors are prepared to resist any illegal takeover of their offices.”
He urged President Tinubu to deploy additional security forces to Osun to forestall violence, recalling that lives were lost in a similar confrontation on February 17.
Oyintiloye emphasized that only the president’s swift intervention could avert another crisis and safeguard peace across the state.
The appellate court had on Friday dismissed APC’s bid to relist its appeal, which was struck out on January 13 for lack of diligent prosecution. Justice Peter Obiorah ruled that granting the request could lead to judicial confusion and held that the application lacked merit.
The legal dispute stems from a suit by the All Peoples Party (APP) challenging the legality of the October 15, 2022 local government elections conducted exclusively with APC candidates. The Federal High Court had ruled in favor of the APP, and the APC’s attempt to overturn that decision was unsuccessful due to procedural lapses.
