Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has projected a wave of thunderstorms and rainfall activities across various regions of the country from Saturday through Monday.
In a weather outlook released on Friday in Abuja, NiMet highlighted the likelihood of early morning thunderstorms on Saturday in parts of Taraba, Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, and Adamawa States. As the day progresses, thunderstorms accompanied by rain are expected over Kebbi, Taraba, Zamfara, Borno, Kaduna, Sokoto, Gombe, and Bauchi.
In the North-Central region, morning thunderstorms are anticipated in Benue, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). By afternoon and evening, Kwara and Kogi are expected to experience similar weather patterns.
Southern states such as Enugu, Ebonyi, Cross River, Lagos, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, and Bayelsa may witness morning showers, with isolated thunderstorms expected later over a wider area including Imo, Abia, Anambra, Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, Edo, and Delta.
On Sunday, NiMet predicted morning thunderstorms across Kaduna, Kebbi, Adamawa, and Taraba, with later developments over Zamfara, Gombe, and Bauchi. Parts of the North-Central including the FCT, Nasarawa, Kwara, Kogi, and Benue are also expected to be affected.
Southern cities such as Delta, Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, and Cross River are projected to experience morning rain, with broader thunderstorm activity forecast later in the day across the entire southern belt.
Monday’s forecast continues the trend, with early thunderstorms in Kebbi, Zamfara, Kaduna, Adamawa, and Taraba, followed by rainfall in Kano, Katsina, and Gombe. The North-Central and Southern regions will similarly experience patches of cloud, sunshine intervals, and likely afternoon storms.
NiMet has advised the public to take necessary precautions against possible strong winds, urging residents to secure loose objects and avoid driving in heavy rain.
“Disconnect electrical appliances and stay clear of tall trees,” the agency cautioned. Airline operators are also encouraged to obtain airport-specific weather updates for safe operations.
