Nigeria Calls for Restraint Amid Escalating Iran-Israel Conflict

Abuja, NigeriaThe Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep concern over the escalating hostilities between Iran and Israel, urging both nations to show maximum restraint and prioritize diplomacy.

The call was made in a statement issued Saturday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Kimiebi Ebienfa, in response to Israel’s recent airstrikes targeting strategic locations in Iran.

Describing the action as a dangerous escalation, the Federal Government emphasized the need for an immediate end to the violence, warning that continued retaliatory attacks pose a grave threat to civilian lives and the stability of the wider Middle East region.

“The government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria condemns Israel’s preemptive strike on Iran, which has intensified hostilities between the two nations,” the statement read. “We urge both parties to exercise the highest level of restraint in the interest of global peace and security.”

Reaffirming Nigeria’s long-standing commitment to peaceful resolution of conflicts, the Ministry stressed that dialogue—not military action—is the only path to sustainable peace. It called on the international community, especially the United Nations Security Council, to intensify efforts toward de-escalation and to facilitate meaningful engagement between both sides.

As a nation anchored in the principles of diplomacy, mutual respect, and non-aggression, Nigeria reiterated its readiness to support any genuine initiative aimed at restoring calm and promoting lasting peace in the region.

The statement concluded with a strong appeal for a united international response, noting that true and enduring peace must be built on negotiation, not confrontation.
