Abuja, Nigeria — The Nigerian Senate has expressed concern over increasing expectations from constituents who now view lawmakers as providers of personal and domestic support, a trend reflective of the growing social pressures on elected officials.
The observation was made by Senator Yemi Adaramodu, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, during a recent appearance on Channels Television’s Politics Today.
Speaking on the role of legislators, Senator Adaramodu lamented that many Nigerians expect their representatives to go beyond lawmaking, often requesting financial support for events such as naming ceremonies, housing construction, and other personal matters.
“We go home and are asked to fund naming ceremonies. When someone builds a house, they come to us for support,” he stated.
He emphasized that while lawmakers are committed to serving their people, these expectations extend far beyond the constitutional duties of legislators.
Adaramodu stressed that elected officials are not only responsible for legislation but also serve as advocates, overseers, and the most accessible link between the people and the government.
“The parliament is not just about making laws. We engage in oversight and advocacy. We are the only visible and reachable arm of government for many Nigerians,” he noted.
Addressing suggestions that the National Assembly operate on a part-time basis to reduce costs, the senator warned against such proposals, arguing they could weaken Nigeria’s democratic foundation.
“If the parliament is on part-time, democracy becomes part-time,” Adaramodu warned. “There is no thriving democracy that sidelines its legislature.”
He further criticized the tendency to single out the legislature for budget cuts, noting a widespread misunderstanding of the critical role lawmakers play in sustaining governance and democratic accountability.
The Senate reaffirmed its commitment to effective representation while urging a national conversation on redefining the expectations placed on Nigeria’s legislators.
