Warsaw, Poland — Polish football icon Robert Lewandowski has temporarily stepped down from international duty following a fallout with national team coach Michal Probierz, in a move that has sent shockwaves across the country’s football community.
The striker, who plays for Barcelona, made the announcement on his verified social media platforms, citing a loss of trust in the coaching staff after being stripped of the captaincy — a role now held by Inter Milan midfielder Piotr Zielinski.
“In light of recent developments and my declining confidence in the coach’s leadership, I have decided to suspend my involvement with the Poland national team for the duration of his tenure,” Lewandowski stated. “I remain hopeful that I’ll have another opportunity to wear the national colours again for the incredible fans who have supported me throughout my career.”
The development has fueled growing tensions within the Polish camp as they prepare for upcoming international fixtures, with critics questioning the timing and handling of the captaincy change.
Lewandowski, 35, is widely regarded as one of Poland’s greatest-ever players, boasting over 140 international caps and serving as the team’s leading goalscorer. His leadership both on and off the field has been central to Poland’s recent campaigns.
With this unexpected twist, the national team must now adapt without their long-time talisman — a blow that could impact their preparations for major international competitions on the horizon.
The Polish Football Association has yet to officially comment on Lewandowski’s decision.
