New York — Global Afrobeats sensation Ayodeji Ibrahim Balogun, famously known as Wizkid, has expressed his hope for improved governance in Nigeria and across the African continent.
Speaking at the premiere of his highly anticipated documentary “Wizkid: Long Live Lagos” at the Tribeca Film Festival on Friday, the award-winning singer reflected on the broader African creative landscape and the importance of good leadership in unlocking the continent’s full potential.
Wizkid underscored his desire to see better governance systems that truly support the aspirations of young Africans. “I hope African nations, including Nigeria, get governance right,” he said. “It’s something I constantly wish for — a better system for our people.”
The Starboy Entertainment frontman also called on fellow African creatives to take pride in their journeys and tell their own stories, noting that the African experience is rich, diverse, and worth sharing with the world.
“I want every African artist to have the opportunity to tell their story in this way,” he said. “We all came from the same struggle, and every voice matters. Everyone deserves that spotlight.”
Despite challenges, Wizkid maintained an optimistic tone, expressing unwavering faith in the continent’s future. “I wish nothing but success for our culture — whether it’s music, film, or sports,” he added. “I’m a positive person. I hope for greatness for all the amazing talents coming out of Africa.”
The documentary, which explores Wizkid’s journey from the streets of Lagos to global stardom, was met with critical acclaim at the festival, further amplifying the influence of African narratives on the world stage.
