Kano, Nigeria — Tragedy struck on the morning of Eid-el-Kabir as a fire broke out at the Kano Phone Market, widely known as Farm Centre, engulfing a section of the bustling commercial hub and destroying several shops.
The incident first surfaced online through a viral video shared by an eyewitness, showing plumes of thick black smoke rising from a cluster of phone and accessory shops within the market.
Although the exact cause of the fire remains undetermined at press time, early accounts from traders and observers suggest it originated from a section densely packed with mobile phone vendors. The fire reportedly caused significant losses before help could arrive.
The Kano State Fire Service has yet to issue an official statement regarding the extent of the damage or the likely cause of the outbreak, leaving affected shop owners and residents anxious for answers.
One trader, Muhammad Daula, recounted how most merchants were away from their shops in observance of the Eid holiday and only learned of the disaster through online platforms. “We were all at home celebrating. I saw the video on social media and rushed to the market. Sadly, some of the shops near mine have been completely gutted,” he said.
Repeated efforts to contact the Kano Fire Service’s spokesperson, Saminu Yusuf, proved unsuccessful as calls to his phone went unanswered.
As investigations begin, traders and residents are calling for a thorough probe into the incident and enhanced fire safety measures at major markets across the city.
