Wike Denies Rift with Fubara, Opposes Emergency Rule

Abuja, NigeriaThe Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed reports of an ongoing feud between him and Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, while also distancing himself from the recent State of Emergency declared in the state.

Speaking to journalists in Abuja on Monday, Wike maintained that contrary to popular perception, he holds no personal conflict with Governor Fubara, but alleged that the governor had allowed himself to be used by political detractors seeking to attack him indirectly.

“I want to make it clear—I don’t have any crisis with Governor Fubara,” Wike said. “I’m not the one who declared a State of Emergency in Rivers, and if I had been consulted by President Tinubu, I would have opposed the move.”

Wike, a former governor of Rivers State and a key figure in the ruling political establishment, expressed disapproval of what he described as “political impunity” within the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and criticized the internal conflicts weakening the party. “What’s happening in the PDP now is like watching undertakers at work. There’s no justification for anyone to willingly plunge into such chaos,” he remarked.

He explained that the emergency declaration may have been a last resort to prevent an imminent impeachment of Governor Fubara, but reiterated that he had no involvement in the decision and would not have endorsed it.

“I’ve never supported the idea of a State of Emergency,” Wike insisted. “But it seems the declaration was done to protect the governor from being impeached. That’s the reality.”

Concluding, Wike emphasized that his issues stemmed not from any personal vendetta but from external forces using the governor as a political pawn. “The truth is, he allowed himself to be used by people who couldn’t confront me directly,” he said.
