AI Deepfake Plot to Discredit Emir Sanusi Foiled

Kano, NigeriaA disturbing plot aimed at tarnishing the image of the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, through the use of advanced artificial intelligence technology has been uncovered by digital forensic experts.

According to preliminary findings, the conspiracy involved the creation and planned circulation of a deepfake video—a hyper-realistic AI-generated clip designed to show the emir making inflammatory statements against both the federal and Kano State governments. The synthetic footage was allegedly timed for release ahead of the upcoming Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, in what investigators describe as a calculated attempt to provoke unrest and erode public confidence in the respected monarch.

The fake video reportedly depicts the Emir in full regalia, speaking critically about recent government policies while appearing to incite division. Experts have verified that the clip was crafted using deepfake tools, which simulate realistic facial movements and speech, making it difficult to distinguish from genuine footage.

A source within the Kano Emirate Council, who spoke on condition of anonymity, condemned the act and urged the public to remain vigilant. “His Highness is deeply committed to the unity and progress of Kano and the nation. No manipulated content can diminish the legacy and leadership he embodies,” the source affirmed.

Further investigations have traced digital signatures linked to the video’s production, pointing to a coordinated campaign believed to have been orchestrated by individuals outside Kano State, possibly driven by political motives.

Security agencies are said to be monitoring key suspects associated with a wider network allegedly intent on destabilizing the emirate and undermining Nigeria’s traditional institutions. The development has sparked renewed calls for stricter regulation of AI technologies and stronger measures against digital misinformation.
