“Black Stars Face Key Absences Before Super Eagles Clash”

LondonGhana’s Black Stars could be without several of their top players as they prepare to face Nigeria’s Super Eagles in the semi-final of the 2025 Unity Cup, taking place in London.

This development was confirmed by Randy Abbey, Chairman of the Black Stars Management Committee, who noted that injuries and club obligations may sideline a number of players from the crucial clash.

The highly anticipated encounter between the two West African rivals is scheduled for May 28, with the winner advancing to the final on May 31 to meet either Jamaica or Trinidad and Tobago at the Gtech Community Stadium.

Speaking to 3Sports (via Joy Online), Abbey revealed the challenges the team is facing with player availability.
“There are quite a number of players who are injured,” he said. “In addition, some players are still involved in European qualification matches, so their clubs are reluctant to release them — especially since this tournament falls outside the official FIFA calendar.”

He further explained that players from ongoing domestic league campaigns, as well as those recovering from injuries, may be ruled out of the squad for the tournament.

The Unity Cup is viewed as an important build-up for both Ghana and Nigeria as they gear up for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers set to begin in September.

The last meeting between the Super Eagles and the Black Stars took place in March 2024, during a friendly in Marrakech, Morocco, where Nigeria claimed a 2–1 victory. Cyriel Dessers scored from the spot while Ademola Lookman added a second. Jordan Ayew netted a late penalty for Ghana in added time.

While Ghana failed to qualify for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, Nigeria’s Super Eagles will be looking to go a step further after finishing as runners-up in the 2023 edition held in Côte d’Ivoire.
