Court Declines Injunction Against Owa Obokun’s Coronation—Proceedings Shift to July 3

Ilesa, Osun State An Osun State High Court has declined a request to halt the coronation of the new Owa Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup, scheduled for Friday, May 23, 2025.

The ruling was delivered by Justice M. Agboola during Thursday’s hearing in Ilesa. The matter stemmed from a suit filed by the Arimoro family of the Bilaro Oluodo Ruling House, challenging the legitimacy of Oba Haastrup’s selection.

Accordingto the court, the issue of whether the first respondent, Oba Haastrup, was properly served court documents must be resolved before any application to stop the coronation can be considered. Justice Agboola adjourned the matter to July 3, 2025, for further proceedings.

“It would be premature to entertain the interlocutory injunction until service issues are clarified,” he stated, expressing concern over the case’s delay beyond the standard 60-day timeline.

The suit, filed under case number HL/8/25, also lists Governor Ademola Adeleke, the Osun State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, the Attorney General, and the Ilesa kingmakers among the defendants.

Meanwhile, security agencies have assured the public of adequate arrangements for the coronation. The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), in a statement by spokesperson Kehinde Adeleke, confirmed the deployment of personnel to ensure a peaceful event.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) also announced that traffic control officers had been positioned around Ilesa to facilitate smooth movement during the ceremonies.

Oba Haastrup’s coronation will take place at Obokungbusi Hall, Ilesa, with a grand reception at Ilesa Grammar School premises. Dignitaries from across the country are expected to attend.
