Erosion renders many homeless in Delta community

Delta state,Nigeria:   Severe coastal erosion has devastated Akugbene Community in Bomadi Local Government Area of Delta State, leaving many residents homeless and without means of livelihood. The erosion, which occurred several days ago, swept away homes, the community’s central jetty, fish ponds, and canoes, triggering fears of a potential recurrence.

Community leaders and affected residents are now calling for immediate government intervention to mitigate the impact and prevent further ecological damage.

“Our people are suffering,” said Mr. Cletus Edougha, Chairman of Akugbene Community. “We urgently need relief materials to ease the hardship caused by this disaster.”

Among the displaced is Mrs. Suogha Gbawei, a widow, who described the current situation as dire. “We have lost everything. We are stranded and desperate for help,” she said, urging the government and relevant agencies to take swift action.

In response, Hon. Nicholas Mutu, the federal lawmaker representing Bomadi-Patani Constituency, has begun mobilizing contractors and deploying heavy equipment to the area. However, residents stress the need for a long-term solution to safeguard the community against future erosion.

During a visit to assess the damage, Chairman of Bomadi Local Government Council, Mr. Dagidi Andaye, emphasized the necessity of constructing a protective shore wall to prevent the community from being eroded into the Forcados River.

“Ninety percent of our communities are located along the river and are at risk of similar disasters,” Andaye warned. He added that the council is working on providing temporary shelters and palliative support to displaced families, while also calling on the Federal and Delta State Governments, as well as ecological agencies, to collaborate in addressing the crisis.

Although no fatalities were reported, Andaye commended the prompt response of local youths, who acted swiftly to salvage what remained of the damaged jetty.
