Abuja, Nigeria— The National Agency for Science and Engineering Infrastructure (NASENI) has announced a strategic investment in Powerstove, a trailblazing Nigerian company recognized for its innovation in clean cookstove technology and leadership in carbon credit initiatives.
The partnership, unveiled by the Agency’s Executive Vice Chairman/CEO, Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, marks a major milestone in NASENI’s broader agenda to foster climate-friendly technology and drive Nigeria’s transition to a low-carbon economy.
“This investment reflects NASENI’s commitment to environmental sustainability, while positioning the agency to benefit from carbon credit revenues,” Mr. Halilu said in a statement issued in Abuja.
Through this collaboration, NASENI will provide growth capital and technical assistance to Powerstove, enabling the company to scale its production from 100,000 to over one million units annually. This increase aims to meet growing national demand for clean and efficient cookstoves while substantially cutting down carbon emissions.
Powerstove, led by its Managing Director, Mr. Okey Esse, is known for its carbon credit project valued at 4.5 million credits, making it the largest local carbon credit initiative by a private company in Nigeria. Esse disclosed that current monthly production stands between 10,000 to 20,000 units. With NASENI’s support, the company is setting up 10 new assembly factories across Nigeria, which are expected to significantly boost capacity and create jobs nationwide.
“We are introducing a model factory concept with compost kits and BASTOS Kits to increase monthly output to between 40,000 and 60,000 units,” Esse explained. “These will be sent to ten strategically selected assembly sites across the country.”
The initiative aims to stimulate local economies, reduce deforestation, and address health challenges linked to traditional cooking methods. Powerstove’s innovation stems from personal tragedy: the founder’s mother died from indoor air pollution caused by firewood usage—an all-too-common reality for many Nigerian women.
Engr. Ijeoma Nnoromele, team lead at Powerstove, emphasized the social impact of the technology. “One in four women and girls in rural areas faces violence while searching for firewood. Powerstove is a safer, smoke-free alternative that not only protects the environment but also saves lives.”
Powerstove stoves use bio-pellets and wood pellets to generate intense, efficient flames, cutting cooking time by up to five times. They also convert excess heat into electricity to charge mobile phones and power LED bulbs—improving both convenience and energy access for rural users.
According to NASENI, the collaboration also aims to track the distribution of cookstoves for carbon credit purposes, expand market reach, reduce household fuel expenses by 40%, and improve indoor air quality.
Powerstove offers 22 different stove variants, including the premium Powerstove X200, which features a built-in battery. NASENI’s support will help scale these solutions across rural Nigeria, aligning with the agency’s goal to boost local production, generate employment, and support environmental preservation.
Mr. Halilu reaffirmed NASENI’s determination to support impactful innovations. “This is a game changer, and with adequate funding and continuous support, the potential is limitless.”
