NIDCOM, IOM partner to curb irregular migration

ABUJA, NIGERIA:The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has reaffirmed its commitment to addressing irregular migration through enhanced collaboration with the International Organization for Migration (IOM). The renewed partnership also includes plans to review Nigeria’s diaspora policy and build institutional capacity.

This was revealed by NIDCOM Chairman/CEO, Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, during a high-level strategic meeting with IOM’s newly appointed Chief of Mission in Nigeria, Sharon Dimanche, held in Abuja.

Ms. Dimanche commended the role of the Nigerian diaspora in national and regional development, particularly through remittances. She emphasized the meeting’s importance in aligning strategic goals and broadening areas of cooperation.

“I commend your leadership and the strides NIDCOM has made in diaspora engagement, especially through the establishment of state focal points,” Dimanche said. “At IOM, we value our partnership and are committed to supporting safe, orderly, and regular migration.”

Dimanche, who previously served in Kenya before her posting to Nigeria, reiterated IOM’s dedication to responsible migration management as a core component of human development.

Hon. Dabiri-Erewa acknowledged IOM’s ongoing support, particularly in facilitating the return of stranded Nigerians from various countries. She emphasized the significance of awareness campaigns aimed at deterring irregular migration, aligning with Nigeria’s broader foreign policy goals under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Highlighting recent achievements, she noted the Federal Executive Council’s recent adoption of the “Nigerian First Policy,” aimed at prioritizing local talent and encouraging diaspora participation in national development.

“This policy is a call to action for Nigerians abroad to come home, invest, and contribute to human capital development,” she stated. “Remittances are important, but now is the time to invest in industries and help build a stronger Nigeria.”
