Police Detained 95 people Over Renewed Cult Clashes In Edo

Edo State, Nigeria —  Over the past two weeks, renewed cult violence in Edo State has led to several deaths. In response, the Edo State Police Command has arrested a total of 95 individuals.

On Saturday, Moses Yamu, the Command’s spokesman, announced that 64 of the suspects have been charged and remanded in court, while the investigation continues for the others.

Yamu said operatives arrested the suspects during raids at locations in Benin and its environs where firearms were also recovered. The arrested suspects, who were members of rival cults such as Maphites, Eiye, and Aye, were engaged in a fight for dominance, according to Yamu.

Among the items recovered from the suspects include 2 locally made pistols, 1 single barrel shotgun and 24 live cartridges.

The police have apprehended suspects from the Maphites, Eiye, and Aye confraternities, believed to be responsible for the recent cult-related killings. Sixty-four suspects have been charged and remanded, while investigations continue. Commissioner of Police Monday Agbonika urged parents to monitor their children’s activities to combat cultism.

He also warned young people in the state to avoid joining illegal groups that could ruin their futures and potentially lead to their deaths or the deaths of others.
