Nigeria Unveils Zinc-Enriched Rice to Boost Nutrition

Abuja, NigeriaThe Federal Government has introduced zinc-fortified rice varieties, FARO 71 and FARO 72, to combat malnutrition and enhance food security across Nigeria.

The initiative was unveiled by the Honourable Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, during a press briefing in Abuja, emphasizing the nutritional and agricultural value of the new biofortified rice strains.

Senator Kyari noted that zinc deficiency remains a widespread health concern in Nigeria, particularly among women and children. He stated, “Zinc is critical to immune health, child development, and overall wellbeing. These new rice varieties will serve as an affordable source of essential nutrients while boosting local rice production.”

Designed to thrive in both savanna and rainforest regions, the newly introduced FARO 71 and FARO 72 offer higher zinc content, improved yields, resistance to pests, diseases, and drought—qualities that make them suitable for Nigeria’s vulnerable farming communities.

Kyari stressed that proper nutrition is non-negotiable for national growth, adding that the government’s commitment to food security includes encouraging the adoption of biofortified crops.

Highlighting collaboration, the Minister praised a strategic alliance with HarvestPlus Solutions and the National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI), which led to the development and release of the rice varieties—the first of their kind in Nigeria and Africa.

Dr. Yusuf Dollah, Country Director of HarvestPlus, confirmed that work is underway with NCRI to produce early-generation seeds, which will be distributed freely through the national seed system to help farmers scale production.

“This breakthrough marks a significant stride toward eradicating hidden hunger and improving agricultural resilience,” Dr. Dollah added.

The Ministry reaffirmed its dedication to innovative agricultural practices that uplift farmer livelihoods and protect public health.
