“Katsina Unveils Green Growth Plan for a Sustainable Future”

Katsina state,Nigeria: Katsina State Governor, Dikko Radda, has launched the Katsina Green Growth Agenda (KAGGA), a strategic initiative aimed at driving climate infrastructure investments and promoting sustainable development throughout the state.

During the Katsina State Climate Action and Green Investment Summit in Abuja, Governor Radda described the KAGGA as a key turning point in the state’s efforts to balance economic growth with environmental preservation.

“KAGGA is structured around four main pillars: Climate-Smart Agriculture, Renewable Energy Leadership, Ecosystem Restoration, and Green Industrialization,” Governor Radda explained. “This agenda will act as a guide to transform our natural resources into sustainable sources of wealth.”

The Governor also highlighted several achievements of his administration in the realm of climate action, including:

•Distribution of dry season farming inputs to 2,040 farmers to ensure continuous food production.

•Acquisition of 38 tractors and 320 handheld tillers, totaling nearly ₦3 billion, to enhance agricultural mechanization across the state.

•Restoration of 1,115 hectares of degraded land through agroforestry and organic farming techniques, with an investment of ₦672 million.

•Planting of over 100,000 economic trees, with plans to nurture an additional 3 million trees across schools, institutions, and shelterbelts.

The Minister of Environment, Mallam Balarabe Lawal, expressed the Federal Government’s commitment to collaborating with Katsina and other states to develop bankable green projects. He also commended the state’s establishment of a State Climate Change Council (SCCC) and the launch of the Tree for Every Child initiative in 2024, which aims to plant between four and ten million trees annually.

“This summit demonstrates Katsina State’s commitment to not just adapting to climate change, but leading with innovative solutions,” Lawal remarked. “It provides a unique opportunity to attract responsible private sector investment in alignment with sustainability objectives.”

United Nations Resident Coordinator in Nigeria, Mr. Mohamed Fall, praised the initiative, urging Nigeria to take a leadership role in Africa’s green transition through ecosystem protection and the creation of sustainable livelihoods.

“The UN stands firmly behind you. We are working closely with the government to ensure the development of an ambitious NDC 3.0 before CoP 30 in Brazil,” Fall stated. “Katsina’s sub-national initiative represents a significant step forward.”
