Tunde Onakoya breaks Chess Record, aims for 70-hour streak

New York, USARenowned Nigerian chess advocate and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde Onakoya, has made global headlines by officially breaking the Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon, emphasizing the power of purpose-driven action.

The historic feat was achieved in collaboration with U.S.-based chess master, Shawn Martinez, as both players surpassed the previous world record of 61 hours, 3 minutes, and 34 seconds during a relentless game at New York City’s iconic Times Square.

A statement issued early Sunday by Onakoya on his official X handle confirmed the milestone, with an inspiring message: “For all the dreamers! We’ve officially broken the record!”

While celebrating the achievement, Onakoya noted that the journey is far from over. The duo has now set sights on reaching a new threshold — 70 continuous hours of chess — with the marathon expected to conclude later today.

More than a showcase of resilience and intellect, the marathon is anchored in a humanitarian vision: to raise global awareness and mobilize resources for the establishment of a tuition-free school for homeless children in Nigeria.

“If you had 70 hours to change the world, what would you do?” Onakoya asked in one of his emotionally charged posts. “Every move, every hour, is a love letter to children who’ve never known the luxury of a second chance.”

Images from the event depict intense moments of strategy and focus under the radiant lights of Times Square. One touching highlight included a surprise visit by Martinez’s wife and their newborn twins — a symbol of love, support, and family unity.

As part of the broader engagement, children were invited to participate briefly in the marathon, reinforcing the project’s commitment to youth empowerment and education.

This marks Onakoya’s second attempt at the record. In April 2024, he and Martinez completed a 60-hour chess duel, briefly holding the title before it was reclaimed by Norwegian challengers at 61 hours. Today, the duo stands resolute — not merely to set a new record but to spark transformation in the lives of thousands of vulnerable children.

Proceeds from the ongoing event, including the sale of custom-designed chess sets, will be channelled into building what Onakoya envisions as “the largest free school for homeless children in Nigeria.”

“No child should ever have their childhood sacrificed for survival,” he stated. “No dream should be buried beneath the weight of poverty.”
