Nigeria: The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has urged the Jigawa State government to declare a state of emergency on polio and routine immunization
According to UNICEF, this move is crucial to sustaining efforts toward polio eradication in the state.
State Counterpart Funding Sought
UNICEF also called on the state government to release counterpart funding for polio and routine immunization. The fund’s Chief of Field Office in Kano, Rahmah Farrah, emphasized the need for commitment from all stakeholders, including traditional and religious leaders, to mobilize communities and ensure all eligible children are vaccinated.
Media Role Highlighted
The media was recognized as a critical partner in promoting awareness about the importance of polio immunization and routine vaccination for children. This was emphasized during a media dialogue organized by UNICEF and the Jigawa State government in Dutse.
Jigawa’s Commitment
The Project Manager of the State Emergency Routine Immunization Coordination Centre, Shehu Ibrahim, acknowledged existing challenges but assured that the state would work to address them and improve immunization outcomes.
