Oye-Ekiti, Ekiti State — The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has approved the immediate leave of its Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, following controversy surrounding allegations of sexual harassment leveled against him by a senior female official of the institution.
The development comes on the heels of intervention by the Minister of Education, Dr. Yusuf Tunji Alausa, who reportedly expressed deep dissatisfaction with the outcome of an internal inquiry by the university’s Governing Council. The initial recommendation had cleared Prof. Fasina of wrongdoing and reportedly urged the complainant, Engr. Folasade Adebayo, to tender an apology—a move the Minister reportedly found unacceptable.
According to inside sources, Dr. Alausa conveyed his discontent directly to Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN), Chairman of the University’s Governing Council, triggering an emergency virtual session held on Monday, April 14, 2025.
During the meeting, the Council resolved to approve the Vice-Chancellor’s immediate exit from office—not as a direct suspension, but under the provision of accumulated leave entitlements. The resolution follows a request from Prof. Fasina to proceed on annual and research leave, which was subsequently granted.
“As Vice-Chancellors nearing the end of their tenure may proceed on accumulated leave, the Council accepted his request,” a source familiar with the proceedings disclosed, adding that Prof. Fasina’s term is scheduled to end in August 2025.
Confirming the decision, FUOYE’s Registrar and Secretary to the Council, Mr. Mufutau A. Ibrahim, released an official statement noting the Council’s approval of six months leave—equivalent to 126 working days—out of the Vice-Chancellor’s total accumulated 228-day entitlement.
In the wake of this development, the Governing Council announced the appointment of Professor Samuel Olubunmi Shittu, current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), as Acting Vice-Chancellor of the institution.
“The Council has appointed Prof. Olubunmi S. Shittu, the most senior of the three Deputy Vice-Chancellors, as Acting Vice-Chancellor for a six-month period effective Monday, April 14, 2025,” the statement concluded.
