Kogi State Bans Public Gatherings Over Security Concerns

Lokoja, Nigeria  —  The Kogi State Government has announced an indefinite ban on public gatherings, citing intelligence reports of potential security threats.

In a statement issued by Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, the government stressed its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property. The recent security developments, he noted, necessitated urgent preventive measures.

Key Security Concerns

1. Fishing Disputes Turn Deadly

Violent clashes over fishing rights in Kasemiya, Katubo, and Umozu Ette within Kogi Local Government Area resulted in two fatalities. As a result, the government has suspended all fishing activities in the affected communities until normalcy is restored. Security personnel have been deployed to enforce the ban.

2. Communal Tensions in Ankpa

Rising hostilities between the Ika-Odele and Ika-Ochala communities in Ankpa Local Government Area have raised fears of escalating violence. Security forces have been deployed, while peace negotiations are underway to resolve the dispute.

3. Statewide Ban on Rallies

Intelligence reports suggest plans by certain groups to stage violent protests under the guise of political and religious activism in Kogi Central. To prevent unrest, the government has placed a total ban on rallies, protests, and large public gatherings that could compromise security. While affirming citizens’ constitutional right to peaceful assembly, authorities maintain that public safety remains paramount.

Government Actions & Directives

In response to these threats, Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo met with the Kogi State Traditional Council, led by the Attah of Igala, to discuss security strategies. The council commended the governor’s swift intervention.

Further directives include:

– Security Clearance for Convoys:  Any individual or group entering Kogi State with a security convoy must obtain prior clearance from the appropriate security agencies.

– Local Government Oversight: Local Government Chairmen are now directly responsible for security management in their respective jurisdictions.

– Community Involvement:  Traditional and community leaders are urged to support government efforts in maintaining peace.

– Enforcement Coordination:  State Security Adviser, Commander Jerry Omodara (Rtd.), will oversee enforcement in collaboration with security agencies.

The government reassured residents that these measures are temporary and aimed at ensuring public safety. Citizens are encouraged to remain law-abiding and report any suspicious activities to security authorities.

Governor Ododo reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to safeguarding lives and warned that any attempts to disrupt public order would be met with decisive action.
