London, UK — The Premier League has confirmed that this summer’s transfer window will be split into two phases to accommodate Manchester City and Chelsea ahead of the expanded FIFA Club World Cup.
According to BBC Sport, the first transfer window will run from Sunday, June 1, to Tuesday, June 10, before closing for five days. The second phase will then resume on Monday, June 16, and remain open until Monday, September 1.
The adjustment follows the introduction of FIFA’s 32-team Club World Cup, which adopts a World Cup-style format and will be hosted in the United States from June 15. Manchester City and Chelsea are the two Premier League representatives in the tournament, joining European powerhouses such as Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Inter Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus, and Borussia Dortmund, alongside Saudi Arabia’s Al-Hilal.
FIFA regulations dictate that any country’s total transfer window cannot exceed 16 weeks per calendar year, with 12 weeks allocated for the summer window and four weeks reserved for winter transfers. To comply with these rules while aligning with the European leagues, the Premier League introduced a five-day break in its summer window, ensuring it remains open until September 1.
Additionally, FIFA has approved two registration windows specifically for the Club World Cup. Participating clubs can register new players between June 1-10, with a secondary registration period for the knockout stage from June 27 to July 3.
The decision to split the transfer window was made to prevent Chelsea and Manchester City from gaining an unfair advantage over other Premier League clubs. By adopting a uniform window structure, the league ensures all teams operate under the same conditions while maintaining synchronization with the broader European football calendar.
