INTERNATIONAL – A well-known home and garden retailer, Homebase, is preparing to close 10 of its stores in the coming days. The company has already launched clearance sales ahead of the shutdowns.
After falling into administration last year, Homebase was partially rescued by CDS Superstores, the parent company of The Range and Wilko. While this deal saved around 70 stores and 1,600 jobs, 74 branches and about 2,000 employees were still at risk. Some stores were later purchased by companies like B&Q and Wickes, but others are set to shut down permanently.
Among the stores closing this month are locations in St Albans, Stockport, and Ewell, which may reopen under different retailers. However, seven other branches will shut for good, with no plans for resale. Affected employees have already been notified of their final working days.
CDS has revamped the Homebase website and plans to repurpose some stores under The Range brand, featuring sections like “Garden Centres by Homebase” and “Kitchens by Homebase.” Additionally, CDS aims to open three new stores per week and expand to 50 locations by the end of April.
List of Stores Closing by Month-End:
St Albans, Hatfield
Bredbury, Stockport
Ewell
Heath Retail Park, Honiton
Catford, London
Milton Keynes
Orpington
Hamilton, Scotland
Omagh, Northern Ireland
Londonderry, Northern Ireland
Some of these locations might be repurposed under new management, but others will close permanently. Meanwhile, Homebase continues to adjust its operations, with some locations reopening under The Range brand.
