Port Harcourt, Nigeria — The Rivers State House of Assembly has expressed full support for President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency in the state, citing prolonged political instability.
In a statement released by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, the Assembly attributed the crisis to the actions of suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, accusing him of authoritarian governance, persistent disregard for court rulings, and unconstitutional interference in legislative affairs.
Assembly Blames Fubara for Crisis
Speaker Amaewhule condemned Fubara’s leadership style, describing it as despotic and tyrannical, noting that the governor’s actions had effectively paralyzed the state legislature.
“The governor’s continuous defiance of judicial decisions and deliberate obstruction of the Rivers State House of Assembly created the instability that necessitated this emergency intervention,” Amaewhule stated.
Backing Presidential Intervention
While acknowledging that the state of emergency was not their preferred outcome, the Assembly emphasized that President Tinubu’s intervention was necessary to restore order.
“The President has acted in the nation’s best interest. We urge all residents to remain calm as the Sole Administrator, appointed by Mr. President, assumes control in the interest of our state and the nation,” the statement read.
Pledge of Support to Sole Administrator
The Assembly pledged its full cooperation with the Sole Administrator, assuring constituents that stability and effective governance would be restored.
“The Rivers State House of Assembly fully supports the Sole Administrator and will provide the necessary assistance to ensure that peace and governance are reinstated in our dear state,” Amaewhule affirmed.
This state of emergency declaration marks a turning point in the ongoing political turmoil that has plagued Rivers State for over a year, setting the stage for new leadership under presidential oversight.
