Tinubu Appoints Vice Admiral Ibas as Rivers Sole Administrator Amid State of Emergency

Rivers – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Rtd) as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State following the declaration of a state of emergency in the region.

This move, announced on Tuesday, resulted in the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara for an initial six-month period. Tinubu stated that the decision was made “in the interest of the good people of Rivers State.” However, he clarified that the judicial arm of the state would continue functioning as mandated by the constitution.

Ibas, a retired Vice Admiral and former Chief of Naval Staff, brings extensive military and administrative experience to the role. Born on September 27, 1960, in Nko, Cross River State, he served as the 22nd Chief of the Naval Staff from 2015 to 2021. Throughout his career, Ibas held numerous command positions in the Nigerian Navy and participated in advanced military training in the United States, India, Pakistan, and Nigeria.

His appointment marks a critical phase in Rivers State’s governance, with expectations of restoring stability and addressing political tensions.
