Since the passing of the late Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Lamidi Adeyemi, on April 22, 2022, the attention has been on the Oyo Mesi (kingmakers) and the Oyo State Government to announce the successor to the throne. The anticipation is particularly strong among the indigenes of ancient Oyo.
Initially, 198 contenders vied for the Alaafin’s stool, but the number was later reduced to 65 and then further narrowed down to 10 candidates after a rigorous interview process conducted by the Oyo Mesi.
The head of all princes in Oyo, Chief Afonja, and one of the strong contenders for the throne expressed their discomfort with the prolonged silence over the matter. The delay has led to concerns that the Oranyan festival, scheduled for September, might be postponed due to the vacant throne.
An official of the state government mentioned that Governor Seyi Makinde is being cautious and meticulous in deciding due to the sensitivity of the matter. The Chief Press Secretary to the Governor also mentioned the need for consultation before making any comments.
The Oranyan festival, an annual celebration initiated by the late Alaafin, will also be postponed due to the vacant throne. The festival holds significance in celebrating the rich Yoruba cultural heritage.
The head of Oyo Mesi, Chief Yussuf Ayoola, was evasive when questioned about the alleged delay in deciding the new Alaafin.
Until an official announcement is made, the people of Oyo will continue to await the decision of the Oyo Mesi and the State Government regarding the successor to the Alaafin’s throne.
