Tinubu hails Central Africa’s backing for ECOWAS’ intervention in Niger

By Damilola Adeleke.

President Bola Tinubu commended the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS) for its solidarity concerning the political deadlock in the Republic of Niger. The statement was conveyed by Ajuri Ngelale, Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity.

President Tinubu expressed his gratitude for the support and solidarity received from President Ali Bongo Ondimba, who also serves as the Chairman of ECCAS. This support underscores the alignment of ECOWAS resolutions against the unconstitutional government takeover in Niger. The President emphasized that military intervention in democratic governance is no longer acceptable in Africa.

Tinubu, who serves as both Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, and Special Envoy of President Bongo, affirmed their commitment to maintaining sanctions and upholding democratic governance. He assured that they would collaborate to restore constitutional order in Niger and prevent intimidation or harassment of President Mohamed Bazoum by the military junta.

Tinubu also highlighted the interconnectedness between West and Central Africa, mentioning Boko Haram attacks in Cameroon, piracy in the Gulf of Guinea, and the refugee situation in Chad. He reiterated the importance of collective efforts to resolve crises in the region.

The Special Envoy from ECCAS conveyed strong solidarity between ECCAS and ECOWAS to the military authorities in Niger. This collaboration between the two regional bodies underscores their shared commitment to democratic governance and stability in the region.
