Boko Haram claims capture of high-profile ISWAP fighters

By Damilola Adeleke

Reportedly, Boko Haram fighters have captured around 60 terrorists from the Islamic State in West Africa Province (ISWAP), including three prominent commanders: Abubakar Saddiq, Abou Maimuna, and Malam Idris. According to a counter-insurgency expert and security analyst, Zagazola Makama, ISWAP members were apprehended while en route to Damasak in Borno State.

It is believed that the Boko Haram Buduma faction gained an upper hand against ISWAP in recent events, capturing several ISWAP enclaves. This success was attributed to the departure of disgruntled ISWAP fighters, who joined forces with the Boko Haram Buduma Faction. The ISWAP members captured were subsequently confined in an underground prison cell at KWATAN MOTA near Dogon Chukwu, where they were held as Prisoners of War.

Supremacy battles between the two terrorist groups have escalated, with the most recent clash occurring on Monday. This intensification of conflict is said to have contributed to the surrender of 78 additional Boko Haram terrorists and their family members to troops of Sector 3 Multinational Joint Task Force (MNJTF) Operation Hadin Kai in Monguno Local Government Area of Borno.

These surrenders were reportedly influenced by sustained military pressure on the terrorists’ hideouts and ongoing infighting with ISWAP. This internal strife has resulted in the deaths of over 100 terrorists from both factions within the past seven days.
