Lagos, Nigeria: The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN), in conjunction with the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and the Association of Maritime Truck Owners (AMATO), has given the Lagos State government a three-day ultimatum to disband two state committees accused of harassment, extortion, and abuse of power.
The unions demand the immediate release of all impounded trucks and the disbandment of the Lagos State Committee on Removal of Abandoned Vehicles and the Special Traffic Management Committee in Apapa.
The unions allege that these committees have engaged in arbitrary truck seizures, extortion, and violence, crippling port operations and inflicting severe financial losses on stakeholders in the haulage sector. They claim that over 100 trucks were hijacked by the Abandoned Vehicle Committee at Unity Bonded Terminal on February 23, falsely labeled as abandoned. The unions also highlighted a violent incident on February 20, 2025, where members of the committees allegedly attacked haulage truck owners and drivers along the Apapa Port Road.
Failure to meet the unions’ demands by February 26, 2025, will result in an immediate industrial action and the withdrawal of services by all their members across the state. This looming strike threatens to paralyze port operations in Lagos, Nigeria’s economic hub, and could have far-reaching implications for the nation’s economy.
