Edo Communal Clash Claims Seven Lives, Injures Six

Benin City, Nigeria  —   A violent communal clash in Edo State has left seven people dead and six others injured, according to the state police command.

The conflict erupted between the Gbelemonti and Maidoti communities in Ovia North-East Local Government Area, with tensions escalating before security operatives intervened.

Confirming the incident, the Edo State Police Command’s spokesperson, Moses Yamu, revealed that authorities swiftly responded to distress calls, deploying personnel to restore order.

“Upon arrival, security operatives managed to calm the situation. However, seven individuals succumbed to their injuries, while six others were hospitalized,” Yamu stated.

An investigation has commenced to uncover the circumstances surrounding the violence, with Edo State Commissioner of Police, Betty Otimenyin, assuring the public that those responsible will be held accountable.

The police spokesperson urged residents to seek lawful means of resolving disputes rather than resorting to violence. He emphasized that the tragic incident could have been prevented if the affected parties had engaged appropriate authorities instead of taking the law into their hands.

Edo State has witnessed recurring communal conflicts in recent years, often triggered by land disputes, chieftaincy rivalries, and resource control battles. Security analysts note that political interference and the influence of cult groups have further exacerbated tensions, making conflict resolution more challenging.

Reports indicate that from July to December 2023, at least 135 people lost their lives due to cult-related violence and communal clashes in the state. Similarly, between January 2021 and December 2023, over 180 deaths were recorded from similar incidents, highlighting the persistent security challenges in Edo.

In response, the Edo State government and security agencies have intensified peace-building initiatives, engaging community leaders and deploying additional security personnel to flashpoints. However, despite these efforts, sporadic outbreaks of violence continue to threaten the region’s stability.

Stakeholders have called for more sustainable solutions, including conflict resolution mechanisms, economic empowerment programs, and enhanced security strategies, to prevent further bloodshed and foster lasting peace among communities.
