Jerusalem, Israel — The Israeli government has delayed the scheduled release of over 600 Palestinian prisoners, citing repeated violations by Hamas.
The postponement was announced after Hamas freed six Israeli hostages on Saturday, the last captives designated for release under the initial phase of a ceasefire agreement that began last month.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office confirmed early Sunday that the release of Palestinian detainees would not proceed until another group of Israeli hostages was secured.
The statement emphasized that future exchanges must be conducted “without humiliating ceremonies.”
The fragile ceasefire deal has faced multiple challenges, with Israel accusing Hamas of breaching its terms.
While the release of six hostages was a notable step in the peace process, the delay in freeing Palestinian prisoners highlights ongoing tensions and the delicate nature of negotiations between both sides.
Efforts to maintain the ceasefire remain uncertain as both parties navigate the complex path toward stability.
