Pope Francis Remains in Critical Respiratory Condition

Vatican City —  Pope Francis, 88, is in critical condition following a severe respiratory crisis, requiring intensive medical intervention.

A Vatican statement on Saturday confirmed that while the Pope remains alert and seated, he is on high-flow oxygen support and has received blood transfusions to manage anemia-induced low platelet levels.

The pontiff is currently undergoing treatment for pneumonia in both lungs at Rome’s Gemelli Hospital. His condition is complicated by pleurisy, a lung inflammation stemming from a past surgery that removed part of his lung at age 21.

Although doctors have ruled out an immediate threat to his life, they caution that he remains in a delicate state.

Pope Francis was admitted on February 14 after experiencing breathing difficulties and, for the second consecutive week, will be unable to lead Sunday prayers with pilgrims.

The Argentine leader has faced several health challenges in recent years, including a three-night hospitalization for bronchitis in March 2023.
