Abuja, Nigeria — Prominent figures, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, ex-Chief of Defence Staff General Lucky Irabor (retd.), and distinguished military officers, gathered to pay tribute to the late Major General Christopher Jemitola (retd.), who passed away on February 6, 2025.
General Jemitola, who collapsed while playing golf at the IBB Golf Club, Asokoro, Abuja, was remembered at a solemn service of songs attended by dignitaries from across the nation.
Represented by former Cross River State Governor Donald Duke, Chief Obasanjo described his former Aide-de-Camp as a loyal and dedicated officer whose unwavering commitment to duty set a high standard in the military.
In his eulogy, General Lucky Irabor hailed Jemitola as a fearless officer and a steadfast mentor, emphasizing his crucial role in shaping military strategy and leadership. According to Irabor, Jemitola was a key advisor during his tenure as Chief of Defence Staff, always providing guidance and support to fellow officers.
A deeply emotional tribute came from Brigadier General Olagunsoye Oyinlola (retd.), former Governor of Osun State, who recounted the painful moment he broke the news of Jemitola’s passing to Obasanjo, who, overwhelmed with grief, tearfully exclaimed, “My ADC!” Oyinlola further recalled Jemitola’s expertise in diplomacy and his ability to navigate military hierarchy with precision.
The late General’s brother, Segun Jemitola, described the family’s loss as heartbreaking, while Dr. Charles, a childhood friend and former classmate from Barewa College, reflected on Jemitola’s disciplined and determined nature.
The funeral service at Four Square Gospel Church, Asokoro, was followed by a full military parade as General Jemitola was laid to rest at the National Military Cemetery.
Representing the Chief of Army Staff, General Christopher Musa, Major General Lawrence Fajoku, Chief of Administration, led the military delegation in paying final respects.
The ceremony highlighted the enduring legacy of General Jemitola, as family, friends, and colleagues celebrated his lifetime of service, patriotism, and dedication to Nigeria.
