NANS Insists on Student Representation in NELFUND Board

Abuja, Nigeria —  The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has strongly advocated for student representation in the upcoming Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) Board meeting, warning that failure to grant this request will result in mass action.

In a letter addressed to Akintunde Sawyerr, Managing Director of NELFUND, and Jim Ovia, Chairman of the Board, NANS President Lucky Emonefe expressed concern over the exclusion of students from key discussions affecting their future. He emphasized that, as the primary beneficiaries of the fund, students must have a voice in decisions regarding the administration and distribution of loans.

“The Nigerian Education Loan Fund exists to serve students, and it is unacceptable for us to be sidelined in matters directly impacting our education,” Emonefe stated. He further warned that any attempt to proceed without student representation would be met with strong resistance, including a total shutdown of the meeting venue.

NANS, representing over 50 million students nationwide, reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring inclusivity in policymaking. The student body stressed that Nigerian students would no longer tolerate being passive observers in discussions that shape their academic future and welfare.

The statement concluded with a firm declaration: ‘No student, no meeting.’
