Sanwo-Olu, South-West Governors Pay Tribute to Ayo Adebanjo

Lagos, Nigeria. —  Lagos State Governor and Chairman of the South-West Governors Forum, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has joined other regional leaders in mourning the passing of elder statesman and nationalist, Chief Ayo Adebanjo.

Adebanjo, a prominent chieftain of Afenifere and former National Chairman of the Alliance for Democracy (AD), passed away at his Lekki residence on Friday at the age of 96.

In an official statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, Governor Sanwo-Olu described Adebanjo’s demise as a profound loss to Nigeria, the Yoruba socio-cultural organization Afenifere, and the people of Ijebu and Ogun State.

Extending his condolences to the Adebanjo family, Ogun State Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, and the Isanya Ogbo community in Ijebu, Sanwo-Olu paid tribute to Adebanjo’s lifelong commitment to social and political causes, despite never holding an executive or appointed government position.

“On behalf of my family, the government and people of Lagos State, and the entire South-West, we honor the remarkable life of Chief Ayo Adebanjo, a devoted nationalist who dedicated his years to the progress of the Yoruba people and Nigeria as a whole,” Sanwo-Olu stated.

He highlighted Adebanjo’s enduring legacy as a lawyer, politician, activist, and Afenifere leader, emphasizing that his impact will remain etched in history for generations.

“The contributions of Chief Ayo Adebanjo cannot be erased. His unwavering advocacy for truth, justice, true federalism, and good governance spanned over seven decades, shaping Nigeria’s democratic landscape,” he added.

Sanwo-Olu also praised Adebanjo’s courage and integrity, recalling his relentless fight for democracy, particularly his role in the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) against the annulment of the June 12 election.

Expressing his deepest sympathies, the governor extended prayers for the late elder statesman’s family, friends, associates, and the entire Yoruba community. He prayed for strength and comfort for all those grieving the passing of a remarkable leader whose voice and vision defined an era.
