London, England — Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has confirmed that striker Nicolas Jackson will be out of action for up to eight weeks due to a muscular injury.
Jackson sustained the injury during Chelsea’s 2-1 victory over West Ham in early February, forcing him off early in the second half. Speaking on Thursday, Maresca provided an update, stating that the forward will not return until after next month’s international break.
“Nico will be unavailable until the international break and is expected to return afterward,” Maresca said, as reported by Sky Sports.
The Chelsea boss admitted that while the initial assessment suggested a minor issue, further scans revealed a more significant hamstring injury.
“We knew it was a muscular problem, but because of his initial reaction, we didn’t think it was serious. Unfortunately, the scan showed otherwise, and he is expected to be out for about six to eight weeks.”
In addition to Jackson, Maresca confirmed that Marc Guiu is also set for a spell on the sidelines due to a similar hamstring injury.
However, there was some positive news, with Romeo Lavia and Benoît Badiashile nearing full fitness, while Wesley Fofana has rejoined team training. Despite this, Maresca noted that Fofana will require “two or three weeks” before he is match-ready.
The Chelsea boss also dismissed speculation about Reece James suffering a further setback, clarifying that the full-back remains in contention for selection despite missing the FA Cup defeat against Brighton.
