FG Partners UN to Tackle Environmental Challenges

Abuja, Nigeria  —  The Federal Government of Nigeria has formalized a partnership with the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) to implement the Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (NEWMAP), backed by funding from the European Investment Bank (EIB).

The announcement was made by Dr. Anda Yalaks, National Project Coordinator of NEWMAP-EIB, in a message to State Project Coordinators nationwide.

Dr. Yalaks confirmed that the project has fulfilled all necessary prerequisites, enabling the immediate release of funds. He further disclosed that the European Investment Bank is set to declare the initiative “disbursement effective,” signaling the commencement of full-scale implementation.

A statement from Mu’azu Madaki, Nasarawa State’s Communication Officer for NEWMAP-EIB, reiterated that State Project Coordinators would receive further guidance from the National Office on the next phases of the initiative.

The NEWMAP-EIB project is designed to combat Nigeria’s pressing environmental challenges by addressing erosion and watershed management. It aims to enhance infrastructure resilience, promote sustainable development, and mitigate the long-term impacts of climate change across the country.
