FG Reaffirms support for Local Govt Autonomy Implementation

Abuja, Nigeria  —  The Federal Government has reiterated its dedication to strengthening local governance and ensuring the full implementation of local government autonomy across Nigeria.

This commitment was emphasized by the Minister of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Affairs, Mr. Zaphaniah Jisalo, during the Local Government Development Summit held in Abuja. The summit, themed “The Supreme Court Ruling on Local Government Autonomy and the Future of Local Government Administration and Grassroots Development,” served as a platform for discussing the future of decentralized governance.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Jisalo described the Supreme Court ruling as a historic milestone, noting that it provides a rare opportunity to reshape governance at the grassroots level by granting local authorities greater financial and administrative control.

“This ruling offers a transformative moment for grassroots governance, ensuring that decision-making power and resources reach the local level where they are most needed,” he stated.

Reaffirming the Ministry’s commitment to supporting this transition, Mr. Jisalo, represented by the Ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Dr. Onwusoro Ihemelandu, outlined plans to collaborate with all tiers of government. He highlighted that these efforts align with the 8-Point Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, which prioritizes governance reforms.

Additionally, he stressed the importance of strategic partnerships, revealing that the Ministry aims to engage with local governments, development agencies, and private sector stakeholders to enhance capacity building, infrastructure development, and service delivery.

The summit, organized by the Committee on States and Local Government Administration, is expected to provide a structured roadmap for the full implementation of local government autonomy, setting the stage for more efficient governance and improved grassroots development across Nigeria.
