House of Reps Calls for Suspension of Telecom Tariff Hike

Abuja, Nigeria —  The House of Representatives has urged the Federal Government to suspend the proposed increase in telecommunication tariffs, citing concerns over poor network service and economic hardship.

Leading the motion of urgent public importance, Hon. Obuku Oforgi, representing Yenagoa/Opokuma Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, condemned the planned hike as insensitive and warned of its negative impact on consumers already grappling with financial difficulties.

Oforgi stressed that small businesses, which rely on affordable telecom services for operations and customer engagement, would be disproportionately affected by the increase.

Following deliberations, the House resolved to direct the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy as well as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to put the proposed tariff adjustment on hold until there is a significant improvement in service quality.

Additionally, the House Committee on Telecommunications has been assigned to oversee compliance and ensure consumer interests remain protected.
