Protest Erupts in Rivers Over Police Shooting of Youth.

Omagwa, Rivers State  —  Tensions flared in the Omagwa community, Ikwerre Local Government Area of Rivers State, following the fatal shooting of a local youth, Chikuma Egbule, by a police officer.

The incident, which occurred on [Date], triggered an outpouring of anger among residents, who carried the victim’s body to the Omagwa Divisional Police Station in protest.

Highway Blockade Disrupts Movement

As emotions ran high, demonstrators were met with resistance from police officers at the station. In response, they blocked the major highway linking Port Harcourt International Airport to Owerri, Imo State, causing severe traffic congestion.

Grace Iringe-Koko, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed that the officer responsible for the shooting had been arrested.

“The command is fully aware of the situation, and the Commissioner of Police is taking necessary action. The victim’s body has been moved to the mortuary, and the officer involved is currently in custody as investigations are ongoing,” she stated in a WhatsApp message.

She further assured that security personnel had been deployed to restore order, emphasizing that measures were in place to prevent further unrest.

The situation remains under close monitoring as authorities work to address the incident and ensure justice is served.
