Abuja, Nigeria — The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has impounded at least 60 vehicles in the Federal Capital Territory as part of a nationwide enforcement campaign targeting number plate violations.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja, Assistant Corps Marshal (ACM) in charge of Operations, Hyginus Omeje, stated that the crackdown aims to curb the use of fake number plates, which have reportedly been linked to criminal activities.
Omeje highlighted security concerns raised by diplomatic missions regarding the cloning of their number plates, particularly in Abuja and other major cities. He assured that the FRSC is investigating the sources of these counterfeit plates and will ensure those responsible face legal consequences.
In addition, Omeje emphasized that several motorists had been found using unauthorized number plates, which are not legally recognized.
Reinforcing the agency’s position, Assistant Corps Marshal for Motor Vehicle Administration, Goodwin Omiko, warned that the FRSC would no longer tolerate the use of illegal number plates due to their security risks.
Omiko outlined several violations under the special enforcement operation, including the use of fake diplomatic plates, expired number plates for former public officials, and the concealment of vehicle registration details. He urged motorists to remove such plates immediately or risk prosecution.
The FRSC reaffirmed its commitment to upholding road safety laws and ensuring compliance to maintain security on Nigeria’s highways.
