LAGOS STATE – The Lagos State House of Assembly witnessed heightened security and political drama as lawmakers resumed plenary on Monday, following the impeachment of former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa. The tension was fueled by Obasa’s recent declaration to reclaim his position, despite the House electing Rt. Hon. Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as the new Speaker.
Amid tight security, lawmakers gathered in the Speaker’s office for a symbolic group prayer and photo session, reaffirming their allegiance to the new leadership. Security personnel at the Assembly complex conducted thorough screenings, closely monitoring allies of the impeached Speaker.
Meanwhile, political divisions emerged within the Governance Advisory Council (GAC), with some members backing Obasa’s reinstatement while others upheld Meranda’s leadership. A group known as The Progressives Alliance (PA) also voiced concerns, arguing that the speakership should remain within Lagos West for equity.

In response to allegations of financial misconduct during his tenure, Obasa dismissed claims of mismanagement, calling them baseless and urging for evidence to substantiate the accusations. Reports suggest that the new leadership may launch a probe into his tenure.
As the standoff continues, political observers anticipate further developments as the Assembly navigates this leadership crisis.
