Ikeja, Lagos — Supporters of Mudashiru Obasa, the recently impeached Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, gathered at the Speaker’s Lodge on Joel Ogunnaike Street, GRA Ikeja, to host a welcome party for him.
The gathering, which took place on Saturday morning, saw attendees wearing vests and caps bearing pro-Obasa slogans. The event was reportedly organized to welcome Obasa, who was abroad at the time of his impeachment.
Armed security personnel, including police officers, were stationed at the venue to ensure order.
It remains unclear why the Speaker’s Lodge was chosen as the venue for the event, considering Obasa no longer holds the position of Speaker.
Obasa was impeached on January 13 by more than two-thirds of the 40-member Lagos Assembly over allegations of misconduct and other offences. Following his removal, Mojisola Meranda, his deputy, was elected as the new Speaker, marking a historic moment as the first female to lead the legislative body in the South-West region.
Representing Agege Constituency I, Obasa has been a member of the Lagos Assembly since 2007 and served as Speaker since June 2015.
