Ilorin, Kwara State— Protesters in Ilorin have called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, to transfer the investigation into Olatunji Jimoh’s alleged death in police custody to the Force Headquarters to ensure a fair and thorough probe.
The demonstration, held at the NUJ Secretariat, was led by Mr. Owolabi Olumuyiwa, convener of the “Justice for Late Olatunji” movement, who urged the IGP to prioritize fairness and transparency in handling the case.
Olatunji Jimoh reportedly died in police custody in Ilorin on December 20, 2024, after being arrested for allegedly owing N220,000 to his superior at work, Gabriel Sunday.
Concerns Over Delayed Investigation
Mr. Olumuyiwa expressed dissatisfaction with the Kwara State Police Command’s handling of the investigation, accusing the command of evading engagement with Olatunji’s family following the release of the autopsy report.
He remarked, “The command’s delay in investigating this case raises doubts about their ability to be impartial. They cannot be trusted to investigate themselves.”
He further called on Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq to intervene and ensure justice is served for Olatunji’s family.
Barrister Olukayode Oloyede, legal representative for the family, praised the IGP for his initial efforts in addressing the case. According to him, preliminary findings contradict earlier claims that Olatunji’s death was a suicide.
The IGP had previously visited the bereaved family and assured them of a swift and thorough investigation to uncover the truth.
Protesters displayed placards bearing messages such as, “Silence is a crime in the face of injustice,” “Governor AbdulRazaq, we demand justice for Olatunji,” and “Stop the killing of our youth in Kwara State.”
The demonstration highlights growing public demands for accountability and transparency in the investigation, reflecting widespread concerns over police practices and the need for justice in the case.
