U-19 Cricket: Nigeria Stun New Zealand in Historic Victory

Sarawak, Malaysia —  Nigeria secured a historic victory in their first-ever completed ICC Women’s U-19 World Cup match, defeating New Zealand in a thrilling contest.

Making their ICC Women’s U-19 World Cup debut, Nigeria faced delays after their opening match against Samoa on Saturday was abandoned due to rain. Despite the persistent wet weather, the Nigerians seized their chance in a rain-shortened 13-over-a-side game.

 

A Game-Changing Performance

Batting first, Nigeria posted 65-6, with Captain Piety Lucky leading the charge. The team then delivered a spirited performance in the field, tightening the screws on New Zealand’s chase.

The Kiwis needed nine runs in the final over but were restricted by Nigeria’s disciplined bowling attack, particularly Lilian Ude, whose precise delivery sealed the win. New Zealand fell two runs short, finishing at 57-5.

Nigeria’s captain, Piety Lucky, was named Player of the Match for her all-round brilliance. She contributed 18 runs off 22 balls and delivered an economical bowling spell, taking 1 wicket for just 8 runs in 3 overs.

With this victory, Nigeria tops Group C with three points. South Africa, who defeated New Zealand in their opener, and Samoa, who face each other later today, follow with one point each.

New Zealand remains at the bottom with no points after consecutive losses.
