Tel Aviv, Israel. — Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has asserted that Israel reserves the right to resume military operations in Gaza if ongoing negotiations fail.
Speaking less than 12 hours before a scheduled ceasefire was set to begin, Netanyahu emphasized the importance of securing the release of 33 Israeli hostages as part of the initial phase of the ceasefire agreement.
“The 33 hostages are coming home,” Netanyahu declared, extending gratitude to US President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump for their roles in facilitating the agreement.
However, Netanyahu issued a stern warning, stating, “We will not move forward with the deal until we receive the names of the first three hostages scheduled for release today.”
Mediator Egypt’s Role
Earlier, mediator Egypt announced that 1,890 Palestinian prisoners would be freed during the first phase of the ceasefire, in exchange for the 33 Israeli hostages. However, the exact numbers have yet to be confirmed, adding uncertainty to the arrangement.
Netanyahu’s remarks underline Israel’s cautious approach, signaling a readiness to return to conflict if negotiations falter.
This development highlights the fragile nature of the truce and the high stakes for all parties involved.
