Sarawak, Malaysia — Nigeria and Samoa were each awarded a point after their Group C opener in the ICC U-19 Women’s T20 World Cup was abandoned due to persistent rain.
The much-anticipated game, scheduled to hold at the Borneo Cricket Ground in Sarawak, Malaysia, did not progress to the toss stage before the weather conditions forced officials to call it off.
As a result, Nigeria’s next challenge will be against New Zealand on Monday, January 20, at the same venue. The team will wrap up their Group C campaign against South Africa on Wednesday, January 22.
Group B Encounters Also Affected
Similarly, in Group B, England and Ireland were compelled to share points following another rain-interrupted match. Ireland, having sent England to bat, initially faced an aggressive start from English opener Davina Perrin, who scored a quick 26 off 19 balls, including the tournament’s first six.
Strong contributions from Charlotte Stubbs (31 off 34) and Jemima Spence (37 off 27) helped England reach 144-7 in their allotted 20 overs. Ireland’s response began with a mix of boundaries and early wickets, reaching 28-2 in 3.5 overs before rain intervened.
The weather ultimately prevented further play, leaving both teams unable to complete the game.
Despite the rain disruptions, the tournament promises intense competition as teams look to advance beyond the group stages.
