Italian tourism minister to face trial over alleged fraud.

Italian Minister of Tourism—Daniela Santanche, will be standing trial for alleged falsification of financial statements at her former publishing company, Visibilia.

Santanche, a member of Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s far-right Brothers of Italy party, has denied the allegations of fraud during her tenure as the chair and CEO of the media publisher and advertising agency.

Prosecutors have claimed that the financial forecasts in the company’s business plan were overly optimistic, leading to the charges against Santanche. Her lawyer has expressed confidence in proving her lack of involvement in the alleged fraud. If found guilty, she could face serious consequences.

Santanche is the second Meloni minister to face trial, following Transport Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Matteo Salvini, who was recently cleared of charges related to detaining a migrant boat during a previous government. The opposition parties have called for Santanche to resign in light of the ongoing legal proceedings.

In addition to the falsification case, Santanche is also under investigation for alleged benefit fraud and the bankruptcy of an organic food company, Ki Group-Bioera, that she previously co-managed. The legal proceedings and investigations surrounding Santanche raise questions about her continued role in the government and the potential impact on the administration of Prime Minister Meloni.
