Luciano Sanchez, an Argentinos Juniors defender, broke his leg after an accidental stomp from veteran Fluminense left-back Marcelo during a Copa Libertadores match in Buenos Aires on Tuesday.
Sanchez was seriously injured after Marcelo unintentionally stomped directly on his leg while attempting to make a move with the ball.
As the Argentine yelled on the pitch, surrounded by concerned players from both teams, the former Real Madrid player was sent off in tears in the 56th minute of the game with the score at 1-1.
After the game, Marcelo said he experienced a very difficult moment on the pitch as he inadvertently injured a colleague and wished the Luciano Sanchez a quick recovery.
In a video shared by a fan of Marcelo, the former Real Madrid player accidentally stamped on the kneel of Sanchez and broke his leg.
In the 14th minute of the first leg of the round-of-16 encounter, Gabriel Avalos scored for the hosts with a volley and later in the game, Argentinos goalkeeper Alexis Martin Arias was sent off in the 76th minute and was replaced by substitute midfielder Luciano Heredia until the end of the match.
Fluminense took advantage of the opportunity and equalized from long range with Samuel Xavier in the 87th minute.
The clubs will meet again next Tuesday at Maracana Stadium for a chance to advance to the quarterfinals.
